bldg Wins 2016 IIDA MAC Design Award
“The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the International Interior Design Association is a professional organization dedicated to advancing the knowledge of interior design among professionals and expanding the awareness and appreciation of interior design among the general public.” Each year the Mid-Atlantic Chapter (MAC) of IIDA honors the best in regional design at The Premiere. This awards ceremony recognizes the winners of the design awards competition.
We’re happy to announce that at this year’s competition we received the Merit Award in the category of ‘spaces under 10,000 square feet’ for our design of the Association for Fish and Wildlife Agencies (AFWA) office. For this project our design team was faced with the challenge of creating a warm, natural environment that incorporated sustainable materials and brought the feel and spirit of the outdoors into the workspace.
Throughout the space, commonplace materials are used in surprising and functional ways. The reception area features walnut butcher block as the reception counter that becomes an entry arch. The polished concrete floors, often considered an outdoor material, bring modern warmth. Custom graphics throughout the space create immersive elements that add layers to the story of this space. A Masonite peg board in the reception provides a space to display art and memorabilia from AFWA staff and their members.
Forgoing traditional systems furniture, the team instead used drywall construction and casegoods to create the open desking. Each team shares a walnut counter as a standing height alternative; encouraging interaction between employees while allowing seated visual privacy. The project also incorporated adjustable height desks for all offices.
And one of our favorite features is the “den,” used for casual meetings and events. AFWA wanted a space alternative to a traditional conference room. Modern graphic wallpaper, a plaid ceiling, and an antler chandelier, give the den whimsy and warmth.
