bldg's Office

On April 1st, after weeks of planning and design and a month of very efficient construction, we moved into our new office located in the Woodley Park neighborhood of Washington DC. As an interior architecture firm that focuses primarily on workplace design we were thrilled to design our own space!

One of the most fun parts of the process was picking finishes for our floors, walls, and counter tops. Previously we've written about our Ikea desks and in the future we'll share more details about the entirety of the office.... for now though, a bit about our favorite finishes!

Before we moved in the space was home to a Nationwide Insurance. You can see below, the space was pretty bare bones—white walls, hardwood floors, old carpeting and fluorescent lighting.

In our day to day we spend a lot of time looking at finish samples. We have books and books of carpet samples, hundreds of fabric swatches, many pounds of tile (we know because we just moved them all!), paint books, wall coverings, and so much more. When we design spaces for clients it's always our goal to create a functional office space that embodies the mission and spirit of the organization.

Because we spend so much time looking at cool materials it would be easy to choose things that we think are really cool but don't necessarily match the look and feel we're trying to achieve (unfortunately the glitter filled counter top that I'm obsessed with just didn't quite fit with our scheme). For our new space we began by selecting flooring materials and colors that worked together to achieve a look that represents bldg.

Above you can see that we selected a combination of carpet and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) with a wood grain pattern for the flooring. Referencing the first graphic in the post will show you that the carpet runs underneath the desks and the LVT runs from the entryway through the bathrooms and pantry. Our last office had walls painted in bright primary colors. For this space we stayed (loosely) with our primary color scheme but chose less saturated versions of red, yellow, and blue. These colors provide accents to the white and gray walls and exposed ceiling.

One of our goals for the new office was to have a large work surface or table where we could spread out our materials during projects. We achieved this by designing a large island with tons of storage space below and an amazing laminate counter top.

It's hard to understand the dimensions from the photo above but the counter measures about 19ft long and 6ft across as it's widest point. To say we love it would be an understatement.

Aside from the big island our second favorite finish selection is the back splash tile in the pantry. The half inch blue tile circles with gray grout pack a lot of punch for being so tiny.

We just celebrated our four month anniversary in the new space and we still love it just as much as the day we moved in. For more information about specific paint colors or vendors click on the graphic at the beginning of this post to enlarge it.  We're still working on finishing touches like hanging artwork and ordering the final pieces and parts of Ikea furniture that we need.

When our space is COMPLETELY and utterly finished we'll be sure to post an office tour complete with photos. For the time being I'll leave you with this image of our entry staircase. We jazzed it up with some leftover paint a few weeks ago and it is the perfect addition to the dark gray and marble of our stairs.
